Sant Jordi, day of books and roses
The April 23rd is an extraordinary day in the calendar. The International Book Day is celebrated and in Mallorca we do it a special way. Not because we are more readers than the rest, is just the coincidence with the day of Sant Jordi.
The book day is celebrated in memory of the death of Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Garcilaso de la Vega. This day was proposed to take the commemorative date with the goal of promoting culture and copyright. In Mallorca this day it's mixed with Sant Jordi's day, day of books and roses.
There is a legend about a dragon who terrorized the kingdom and to calm its appetite, the inhabitants offered lambs to fill him. Because of the shortage of lambs, they decided to offer him people. Until it was the turn of the princess. Sant Jordi saved the young lady slaying the dragon with his sword and from his blood a rose grew. For that reason, on this day, men give women roses and they give a book to their love.
In recent years, this tradition has been gaining strength to become a great celebration for readers and lovers. In the case of Palma de Mallorca, the streets are dressed holiday and there are flower shops and stalls bookstores all around. Culture inundated the city center and some people stops to look at the books or watch the flowers. These days are perfect to buy a good book to get lost while taking the first sun rays. It sounds great, right?
