La Patrona, the pride of Pollença

La Patrona, the pride of Pollença

It is the most awaited moment of the year for the locals, their festival par excellence: August 2nd, the Mare de Déu dels Àngels day, patron saint of Pollença.

It’s a very high cultural interest celebration. The Band of Pollença give the start playing the ‘Alborada’ that sounded for the first time in 1882. At midday, the cossiers (a group of men and a lady dressed in colorful costumes) represent with their dance the triumph of good over evil and finally the party reaches its peak with the mock battle between Moors and Christians. A bloody battle that took place the night of May 30 between the pollencins and the corsairs of Dragut. That night, a citizen, Joan Mas, after invoking the Mare de DéudelsÀngels, gathered all the men of Pollença to stand up to the privateers. And they won.

The recreation year after year of this moment impresses a lot. The town puts all its enthusiasm to revive the battle and take care for their clothes to detail to simulate perfectly both sides: the Moors and Christians. Even elections are held during the year to select those who embody Joan Mas and Dragut, an honor for them and a goal pursued for all men of Pollença. When the battle finish, after winning the moors flag, the winners visibly excited sing the 'Te Deum' in the parish.

It's a really thrilling feast. Many tourists and visitors from other cities come every year to live it next to pollencí people. We highly recommend it. It is not a sight you can see every day.
